Throughout history, there are countless achievements made by humans - from building a pyramid, crossing the ocean in a boat without an engine, cutting continents and making canals, going to the moon and back, to building an internet network that connects all people around the world.
Almost all of these extraordinary accomplishments are the result of the work of many and are unlikely can be achieved by just one or two people. But it turns out that there are humans who are capable of doing things that seem impossible.
Here are 10 extraordinary accomplishments by individuals.
1. Improve the health quality of all mankind
Germs were one of the greatest killers of mankind before the use of the Pasteurization method began in 1863.
Louis Pasteur was the pioneer of a method for sterilizing wine, beer, and milk from bacteria by using heat. This method has since been used for almost anything and has become one of the most effective health milestones in history.
This proves that one person can improve the quality of the health of all mankind, and possibly save millions / billions of lives in the next generation.
2. Increasing Human Food Production
To be able to produce food properly, irrigation is a vital element that cannot be separated from agriculture. The problem is, water flows from a high surface to a low level while agricultural land cannot always be positioned lower than water sources.
That's why the discovery of the Archimedes screw in the 3rd century by the Greek scientist and physicist, Archimedes, was one of the most important milestones. This tool can move water from a low place to a higher place and thus change the world's irrigation system. Maybe this is one of the first water pumps.
The working principle of this tool is still used today and has evolved to various other functions such as power generation, waste processing, wheat grinding, and so on.
3. Drugs that cure (almost) all kinds of diseases
Penicillin was discovered accidentally by Alexander Fleming in 1928. But it was not widely distributed until after World War II. This discovery helped cure various diseases that were previously deadly.
Now various variants of Penicillin are widely available throughout the world as drugs called antibiotics.
4. Planting forests solo and saving animal populations
Having gardening as a hobby is natural. It is also possible that planting a several-hundred-meter square garden is a feat to be proud of. But have you ever imagined how much effort it would take to plant a whole forest alone?
Due to his concern about the endangered wildlife population in his vicinity because of lack of shelter, Jadev Payeng has devoted his life to planting forests covering an area of 1,360 hectares.
5. Medicine that saves billions of lives
Smallpox is one of the most deadly diseases that has claimed about 500 million lives in the 20th century. Fortunately, a scientist named Edward Jenner succeeded in developing a smallpox vaccine that helped eradicate the disease.
Now the method of vaccination is being used everywhere to provide immunity against various diseases and save countless lives.
6. Storing and distributing information en masse
In the beginning, information and knowledge spread orally. The reason is simple, mass production of handwritten media would take an extraordinary amount of time and money.
All changed with the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century. This invention helped store and distribute information and knowledge, shaped modern education, created the bookstore, modern library, and of course the newspaper and magazine industry.
7. Saving 30,000 bees alone
A man named Gary Schempp dedicates his life to finding and saving bees. On one occasion he succeeded in moving and re-housing 30,000 bees.
For those who don't understand why this is important, remember that bees don't just produce honey. They also help pollinate plants and plants cannot reproduce without pollination. And because human life depends on plants, what Gary Schempp did also contributes to human survival.
8. Give wings to mankind
Since the beginning of their existence, humans have always dreamed of being able to fly like birds. The dream was first embodied by the Wright brothers in 1903. Their flying machine and its short flight marked the beginning of a revolution in air travel in the 20th century and a remarkable technical achievement.
Thanks to that, modern humans can travel between continents in just a matter of minutes or hours - a journey that once took months, if not entirely impossible.
9. Transcending human physical boundaries
For decades, and many hundreds of years before, doctors and experts believed that it was physically impossible for a human being to be able to run 1 mile in less than four minutes.
And one day, Roger Banister proved it wrong. He was the first person to break that barrier.
Surprisingly, the event was followed by people who outran Roger Banister, one after the other. You could say that not only did Roger break the running record, but he also helped change the humans perception and remove boundaries that actually don't exist.
10. Conquer the highest peaks in the world
Why do people go to the trouble of climbing a mountain, when they end up going down again?
The answer: because they can.
The purpose of climbing is not only to conquer the mountains, but also to conquer oneself.
That's why one of the greatest challenges for mountaineers is conquering the impossible - the highest peak in the world. It is the peak of Everest at 8,848 meters above sea level. And the first people who did it were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay (also known as Sherpa Tenzing).
Achieving the Impossible
The stories about these people show that there’s no limit of a human being but the one within him/herself. Everyone can achieve any extraordinary and impossible thing.
The trick is to: change perspective, remove the boundaries, and take the first step toward making that change.
